What does 'grain' mean when describing Hermès leather? +

Grain refers to the surface pattern of a leather hide — natural (produced by the animal's own skin texture) or processed (embossed, drum-tumbled). Togo's pebbled grain is natural, produced by drum-tumbling. Epsom's cross-hatch grain is embossed — mechanically pressed. Swift and Box Calf have smooth fine natural grain. Chevre leathers have tight cross-hatched natural grain specific to their goat breed origin. Grain type determines scratch visibility, patina oil-absorption pathways, surface reflectivity, and visual character.
